MiniPCs.zip – Charting the Pareto frontier of Mini PCs

The overall idea is to chart out the thousands of Mini PCs by benchmark and reveal the Pareto Front so you can get the most Compute per Dollar. Definitely a labor of love as I have a number of Mini PCs for my "homelab" (TrueNAS, piHole, Plex, basic stuff). It uses Gemini to extract specs from listings (since they're not often strongly categorized).Quick blog post here: https://luke.zip/posts/pareto-pcs/

A Pareto frontier visualization tool for mini PC specs and pricing that helps homelab enthusiasts find optimal compute-per-dollar configurations.

The pain

Mini PC buyers spend hours comparing fragmented specs across dozens of retailers and marketplaces. Specs are inconsistently listed, benchmarks are scattered, and there's no clear way to see which models give the best performance for the money without manual spreadsheet work.

The gap

No centralized, regularly-updated resource maps mini PCs to their actual performance and cost. Existing PC comparison sites focus on gaming/consumer laptops, not the specific use cases (NAS, Pi-hole, Plex servers) that drive mini PC purchases. The Pareto frontier visualization is novel but unproven as a decision-making tool for this audience.

Build angle

Start by validating whether homelab communities (r/homelab, TrueNAS forums, Plex communities) actually want this tool and would use it regularly. Test if the Gemini-powered spec extraction works reliably at scale. Then explore monetization: affiliate links to retailers, premium filtering/alerts, or selling aggregated data to manufacturers. The real question is whether the audience is large enough and willing to pay.

Strengths

  • Solves a real friction point in mini PC research with a clever technical approach (Pareto frontier visualization)
  • Founder has hands-on domain expertise and genuine use case
  • Low barrier to initial MVP, already built and published
  • Pareto optimization is intellectually elegant and differentiates from basic comparison tools

Risks

  • Market size unclear, homelab enthusiasts are niche; total addressable market may be <100k people globally
  • Data maintenance burden is high; specs change constantly and Gemini extraction may have accuracy issues at scale
  • No clear monetization path; users expect free comparison tools, and affiliate margins on hardware are thin
  • Retailers actively work against scrapers and aggregators; legal/technical friction likely
  • Competitors exist (PCPartPicker for some segments, manufacturer sites); unclear why users switch
  • Pareto frontier is useful but not a primary decision driver, most buyers care about specific features (power consumption, size, GPU) not abstract optimization
