Pieces – Social network for people

Hey HN, long time lurker first time poster. I built a social network called PIECES. After building a private blog last year after I had to get off IG and Substack, I decided to productize it. It's here now. It has a dedicated web experience + iOS/Android.Would love if you tried it out!

Competition

No competitor data yet

Trend

No signal yet

A private social network for creators seeking an alternative to algorithm-driven platforms, but without clear differentiation or monetization path.

The pain

People leaving Instagram and Substack face friction rebuilding communities. They want control over their audience, no algorithmic manipulation, and a owned platform. The creator is solving a real problem they experienced personally.

The gap

The market has Ghost (blogs), Patreon (monetization), Discord (communities), and Substack (newsletters). Pieces occupies unclear territory, it's not specialized enough to own a specific use case, and the pitch doesn't explain what it does better than existing tools or why someone would switch.

Build angle

The founder built this for themselves first, which is good. But the HN post reads like a feature announcement, not a solution to a specific problem. To validate: pick one creator archetype (photographers, writers, podcasters) and deeply understand their workflow. Then show how Pieces solves their problem faster/cheaper/better than their current stack.

Strengths

  • Founder has skin in the game, built it after personal frustration with existing platforms
  • Multi-platform execution (web + iOS + Android) shows execution capability
  • Timing is decent, creator dissatisfaction with big platforms is real

Risks

  • No clear user acquisition strategy mentioned. How do you compete with free, established platforms?
  • Vague value prop. The pitch doesn't explain what Pieces actually does or why it's better
  • Network effects problem. A social network needs critical mass. Starting from zero is brutal without a specific niche
  • Monetization unclear. If it's free, how do you sustain it? If it's paid, why would creators pay when Discord/Substack/Ghost exist?
  • Crowded space. Dozens of 'Instagram alternatives' have launched and failed. What's different here?
  • Single founder risk. Building a social network requires product, engineering, and community management at once
