No signal yet

A demand measurement tool that separates real trading volume from narrative-driven noise in financial markets.

The pain

Traders lose money following false signals. They watch volume spikes that evaporate, read analyst reports that contradict actual order flow, and chase momentum that exists only in social media. Institutional analysts spend hours cross-referencing data sources to verify if demand is real. Retail traders have no systematic way to distinguish between genuine accumulation and coordinated hype.

The gap

Current tools show what happened (price, volume, open interest) but not why it happened or whether it reflects actual buyer intent. Bloomberg terminals, TradingView, and broker platforms display the same raw data everyone sees. No tool isolates real demand signals from noise, no quantified metric that says 'this volume is institutional accumulation' versus 'this is retail FOMO.' Existing sentiment tools measure social media mentions, not market structure.

Build angle

Start by defining what 'real demand' actually means operationally: order book depth, execution patterns, time-weighted volume concentration, large block trades, funding rate behavior, or cross-exchange flow. Pick one market (crypto or single stock) and one metric. Build a simple dashboard showing that metric versus price movement over 6 months. Validate with 20 active traders: does this metric predict price moves better than volume alone? If yes, you have a wedge. If no, the problem may not be solvable or may require different data access.

Strengths

  • Real pain point, traders actively lose money on false signals and would pay to reduce that
  • Measurable outcome, can backtest any demand metric against actual price moves
  • Defensible data moat, requires access to order book, block trade data, or cross-exchange feeds that competitors may not have
  • Recurring revenue model, subscription tool for traders and funds

Risks

  • Demand signal may not exist, hype and real demand might be inseparable in markets; no metric may predict better than random
  • Data access barrier, institutional-grade order flow data is expensive and restricted; retail data may be too noisy to extract signal
  • Crowded space, Bloomberg, Glassnode, Santiment, and dozens of sentiment/on-chain tools already claim to measure real demand; unclear what you'd do differently
  • Vague problem definition, 'hype versus real demand' is intuitive but hard to operationalize; different traders may define it differently
  • Adoption friction, traders are sticky to existing tools; switching costs are high unless your metric is dramatically better
  • Regulatory risk, if tool becomes popular, exchanges or regulators may restrict data access or claim you're enabling market manipulation
