Build a transit app with cleaner UX than Moovit, but only if you can solve the real problem: getting real-time data from fragmented transit agencies.

The pain

Commuters waste time deciphering confusing interfaces, miss connections, and abandon apps mid-journey. Moovit's clunky design creates friction during high-stress moments when people need information fast.

The gap

The market has Moovit, Google Maps, and local transit apps. A better UI alone doesn't create defensibility. You need either exclusive data partnerships, superior algorithms for routing/predictions, or a network effect. Moovit already has 100M+ users and decent funding. Beating them on design isn't enough.

Build angle

Only pursue this if you can: (1) Partner with 3-5 major transit agencies for exclusive real-time data, (2) Build predictive features Moovit lacks (crowding forecasts, delay predictions), or (3) Target a specific geography where you own the data relationship. A generic 'better UI' app will struggle to gain traction against entrenched competitors.

Strengths

  • Clear user frustration with existing solutions is documented and real
  • Transit is essential infrastructure, high frequency of use if you solve it
  • Design improvements are visible and easy to communicate to users

Risks

  • Data access is the actual moat, not UI. Without transit agency partnerships, you're building on sand.
  • Moovit, Google, and Apple Maps are well-funded and improving constantly. Design gap will close.
  • Network effects favor incumbents, more users means better crowdsourced data, making them harder to beat.
  • Monetization is unclear. Transit agencies don't pay much. Ads alienate commuters. Subscriptions have low conversion.
  • You're competing on a feature, not a business model. Moovit can copy your UI in 6 months.
