Replace crude iteration limits in AI agents with control theory algorithms that stop loops when they're actually stuck.

The pain

AI agents using tools (ReAct, function calling) get trapped in repetitive loops, calling the same function, getting the same error, trying again. Developers set max_iterations=10 as a band-aid. This wastes compute, frustrates users with timeouts, and fails silently when agents should have stopped earlier.

The gap

Current frameworks (LangChain, AutoGen, Claude) have no mechanism to detect when an agent is genuinely stuck versus making progress. They rely on hard iteration caps that are arbitrary per use case. No tool applies feedback control (PID, state-space models) to agent behavior.

Build angle

Start as a drop-in wrapper/middleware for existing agent frameworks. Instrument agent state (tool calls, outputs, error patterns) and apply control theory to detect oscillation, divergence, or convergence. Ship as a library that integrates with LangChain/LlamaIndex. Charge per API call or per agent deployment.

Strengths

  • Solves a real, measurable problem, wasted compute and failed tasks in production agents
  • Technical differentiation: control theory is not obvious to most AI engineers, creates defensible IP
  • Low friction entry: works as middleware, no rewrite needed
  • Quantifiable ROI: reduce timeouts, lower token spend, faster user responses

Risks

  • Narrow TAM: only relevant to teams running agentic systems in production (still small in 2025)
  • Requires deep domain knowledge to tune control parameters; risk of becoming a consulting business
  • Incumbents (OpenAI, Anthropic) could add this natively to their platforms within 6 months
  • Hard to sell: buyers don't yet know they have this problem; needs education
  • Validation risk: control theory may be overkill; simpler heuristics (state hashing, error rate tracking) might work 80% as well
