A spreadsheet UI for bulk-editing Git commit metadata that solves a real but narrow problem for developers who need to clean up messy repositories.

The pain

Developers occasionally need to fix commit messages, authors, or dates across multiple commits. Currently they use git rebase -i (tedious, error-prone) or git filter-branch (powerful but dangerous and slow). The process is manual, sequential, and easy to mess up.

The gap

No tool exists that lets you view and edit commit metadata in a tabular format before applying changes. You can't see all your edits at once or easily spot mistakes before they're permanent.

Build angle

Start by building a read-only viewer that shows commits in a spreadsheet. Let users export to CSV, edit locally, then re-import with validation. This is low-risk and proves demand. Only after validation, add direct in-app editing with safety guardrails (dry-run, undo capability, backups).

Strengths

  • Solves a real, specific problem that existing tools handle poorly
  • Low technical barrier to initial MVP (spreadsheet UI + git plumbing)
  • Clear user segment: developers managing legacy repos, open source maintainers, teams with messy commit history
  • Git is ubiquitous, so addressable market is large

Risks

  • Extremely narrow use case, most developers never need this. Frequency of use is low (maybe once per year per developer)
  • High switching cost is near-zero; users can fall back to git rebase -i for free
  • Monetization is hard. Can't charge per-commit or per-repo. Subscription feels wrong for occasional use
  • Categorized as 'Marketing Sales' but is actually a developer tool, suggests misunderstanding of the product
  • Git's distributed nature means users fear data loss; tool must be bulletproof or it won't gain trust
  • GitHub/GitLab could build this as a feature in 2 weeks if it gained traction
