Monolisa v3 – a typeface for developers and creatives

Originally we (Andrey, Marcus, Juho) built MonoLisa in 2020 as we realised there's room for a better monospaced typeface for developers. The key insight was to make the glyphs slightly wider to make more room for design to make letters like m feel less cramped.Since then we've released a variable v2 (2022) and now we're happy to expand the typeface with a new family called MonoLisa Text. The reasoning was to cover *other* use cases beyond coding with this proportional font.We hope you give Monolisa a go as there's a free trial to try. We also welcome feedback!

Monolisa v3 is a refined typeface designed to improve readability and aesthetics for developers and creatives, expanding from monospaced coding fonts to proportional text use.

The pain

Developers and creatives often struggle with cramped, hard-to-read monospaced fonts that reduce comfort and productivity during long coding or design sessions.

The gap

Existing monospaced fonts lack optimal spacing and design balance, and there is limited high-quality proportional typeface options tailored for creative professionals beyond coding.

Build angle

Focus on expanding the font family to cover broader use cases, gather user feedback through free trials, and iterate on design improvements that address specific readability and aesthetic needs.

Strengths

  • Clear understanding of a niche pain point in developer tooling
  • Existing user base and product history since 2020
  • Expansion into proportional fonts broadens market potential
  • Free trial lowers barrier to user testing and feedback

Risks

  • Font market is competitive with many free and paid options
  • Monospaced fonts are a niche product with limited mass appeal
  • Monetization depends on convincing users to pay for incremental design improvements
  • Scaling beyond core developer audience may dilute brand focus
