Office uninstall cleaner tool: SKIP, 42/100 | Ideas Lab

A cleanup utility for Office installation remnants targeting a shrinking problem on a shrinking platform.

The pain

When users uninstall Microsoft Office, leftover registry entries and files can clutter systems and cause reinstall issues. This is real but affects maybe 5-10% of Office users annually, and mostly on older Windows machines.

The gap

Microsoft's uninstaller is basic. Third-party cleaners like CCleaner exist but don't specialize in Office. A dedicated Office cleaner could be more thorough.

Build angle

Freemium desktop tool with premium deep-scan features. Monetize through upsells to system optimization or IT management tools. Distribution through tech forums and Reddit.

Strengths

Solves a real technical problem with measurable outcomes (registry entries removed, disk space freed)
Low development complexity, straightforward file/registry deletion logic
Existing demand signal from Google searches
Could bundle into larger PC maintenance suite for better unit economics

Risks

Tiny addressable market, Office uninstalls happen infrequently and mostly on consumer machines with low willingness to pay
Intense competition from free alternatives (CCleaner, Revo Uninstaller, Windows built-in tools)
Microsoft could improve their uninstaller anytime, eliminating the gap
High support burden, registry modifications are risky; one bad deletion causes support tickets and reputation damage
Difficult to acquire users, no organic growth path, requires paid ads to reach the small audience
Regulatory/trust risk, users distrust third-party registry tools; one security incident kills the business

BreezePDF – Free, in-browser PDF editor

BreezePDF lets you edit, sign, merge, compress, redact, OCR, fill forms, extract tables, and use 30+ more PDF tools — all in the browser, no sign-up. Files never leave your computer.I built it because when people search Google for common PDF tasks, many of the tools they find upload documents to a server. I wanted an option that keeps files local instead.I posted an earlier version on HN last spring: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43880962At the time it only supported a small set of features. Over the last 10 months I rebuilt large parts of it and expanded it to nearly 40 tools, including several ideas that came from comments in that earlier thread. There is also now a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus a CLI/SDK for developers.
