Fata – Spaced repetition to fight skill rot from AI coding

Hi HN, I'm Djoumé. I've been a developer for over 20 years, and like a lot of you I've been coding almost exclusively through an agent in the past few months. It's been amazing to vibe code prototypes in any stack, but when it comes to building something reliable/scalable, I couldn't effectively guide the agent unless I knew the technology. And the scariest part is that I'm seeing a lot of my technical skills decreasing due to AI coding.Reflecting on my journey, I also worry about how the new "AI native" generation of software developer is going to acquire technical depth. So I built fata.dev: short daily spaced-repetition sessions for programming skills (Rust, CSS, React, Python, TypeScript, Architecture). You can try it in the browser with no signup: https://fata.app/coursesIt's an offline-first mobile app built with Capacitor, RxDB and Firebase. The first courses were painfully written by hand, but most content is now AI-generated. It takes about 3000 LLM calls to generate a course, and every code samples goes through compilation, linting, unit testing, AI and a final manual review.Would very much appreciate any feedback on the product & website, what works and what could be better. Thanks!

Spaced repetition app for developers to maintain coding skills while using AI agents, targeting skill atrophy in the AI-native era.

The pain

Developers using AI coding agents daily are losing hands-on technical depth. They can't effectively guide agents without deep knowledge, and new developers won't build foundational skills. This creates a real competency gap, you need to know what you're doing to use AI tools well.

The gap

No existing product directly addresses skill maintenance for developers in an AI-augmented workflow. Existing learning platforms (Codecademy, LeetCode) teach new skills, not retention of existing ones. The spaced repetition angle is sound but unproven in this specific context.

Build angle

Start by validating that developers actually experience measurable skill decay from AI coding, and that daily 5-10 minute sessions move the needle on retention. Test with a cohort of 50-100 developers over 8 weeks. Measure: self-reported confidence, ability to solve problems without AI, and code quality metrics. If retention improves, you have a real wedge.

Strengths

  • Founder has 20 years of credibility and genuine skin in the game, this isn't theoretical
  • Spaced repetition is scientifically validated for learning; applying it to skill maintenance is logical
  • Mobile-first, offline-capable design removes friction for daily use
  • Quality control process (compilation, linting, testing, manual review) differentiates from low-effort AI content
  • Addresses a real emerging problem as AI coding adoption accelerates

Risks

  • Market size unclear: how many developers actually perceive skill rot as a problem worth paying for? Early adopters may be small
  • Monetization untested: freemium model shown but no evidence users convert to paid. Developer tools have brutal unit economics
  • Content moat is weak: competitors can replicate spaced repetition + AI-generated code samples quickly. Differentiation fades fast
  • Retention risk: daily habit formation is hard. App churn could be high if users don't see immediate value
  • Competitive threat: Duolingo, existing coding platforms, or AI tool vendors (GitHub Copilot, Cursor) could add this feature in weeks
  • Unproven thesis: no data yet showing that 5-10 min daily sessions actually prevent skill decay in real developers
