LatticeDB – Like SQLite but for graph databases

We have been using graph DBs more and more at work. I found them painful to work with locally and decided to try and build something better.

Embedded graph database for local development that eliminates setup friction when working with graph data structures.

The pain

Developers working with graphs locally face friction: existing graph DBs require server setup, network overhead, and configuration complexity. SQLite solved this for relational data by being zero-config and file-based. Graph databases lack an equivalent.

The gap

No lightweight, embeddable graph database exists for local development and testing. Developers either use heavy server-based solutions (Neo4j, ArangoDB) or work around the problem with workarounds. The gap is real but narrow, it's a developer experience problem, not a fundamental capability gap.

Build angle

Start by shipping a working SQLite-equivalent for graph queries: single-file storage, no server, REPL/CLI interface, basic graph operations (nodes, edges, traversal). Target solo developers and small teams doing local development first. Validate that the pain is acute enough to switch tools.

Strengths

  • Clear analogy to SQLite gives people immediate mental model
  • Founder has felt the pain firsthand and understands the workflow
  • Graph databases are growing in use; timing is reasonable
  • Low barrier to initial adoption if it works well locally
  • Potential to become standard for graph development like SQLite did for SQL

Risks

  • Market may be too small, graph DB usage is still niche compared to relational DBs
  • Existing solutions (Neo4j Aura, DuckDB with graph extensions) may solve this before you ship
  • Graph query languages and semantics are complex; building a good one is hard
  • Network overhead isn't actually the main pain point for most developers, complexity and learning curve are
  • Switching costs are low but so is switching incentive if current tools 'work well enough'
  • Monetization unclear, how do you make money on a free embedded tool?
