Make PDFs look scanned (CLI or in the browser via WASM)
I made this because the online "make my PDF look scanned" tools want you to upload your file to their servers, which feels sketchy at best. Also, I wasn't happy with the output they produce, I wanted something that looks realistic.

Build angle
Strengths
- Solves a real friction point, privacy concerns with existing tools are legitimate
- Technical execution matters here; better algorithm = clear competitive advantage
- Open-source approach builds trust and community around a sensitive use case
- WASM distribution is clever, no server uploads, no installation friction
- Low distribution cost if positioned correctly on dev communities
Risks
- Demand is unclear, how many people actually need this regularly? The use case may be niche or episodic
- Reputational risk: tool could be used for document fraud, forgery, or deception at scale. Legal liability is real
- Monetization is hard. Free open-source tool has low conversion to paid. Hosted version competes against free local version
- Technical moat is weak. Once algorithm is published, competitors can copy. Quality improvements are incremental
- Market size unknown. This isn't a recurring need for most users, it's a one-time or rare task
