I made a tool that prevents websites from tracking you

I know we are very wary of AI slop but disclaimer: AI was used. I don't think that it is slop though and it was mostly used for formatting.

Competition

Trend

No signal yet

Browser extension that blocks tracking pixels and scripts, competing in a crowded market with established free alternatives.

The pain

Users lose privacy data to advertisers and data brokers. Websites collect behavioral data without meaningful consent. Users have no visibility into what's being tracked.

The gap

uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, and DuckDuckGo extensions already solve this for free. The gap isn't technical, it's distribution and user adoption. Most people don't install privacy tools at all.

Build angle

Rather than another blocker, consider: (1) B2B angle, sell to enterprises protecting employee data, (2) Freemium with specific value-add like tracking visualization dashboard, (3) Mobile-first since mobile tracking is worse and solutions are fewer, or (4) Integration play, embed in a browser or email client.

Strengths

  • Real problem with genuine user demand
  • Technical feasibility is proven by existing solutions
  • Privacy regulation tailwinds (GDPR, state laws) create urgency
  • Low barrier to initial users via HN audience

Risks

  • Saturated market with free, well-funded competitors (Mozilla, DuckDuckGo, EFF)
  • No clear monetization path if positioning as consumer tool
  • Requires constant maintenance as tracking methods evolve
  • User acquisition expensive, privacy tool users are skeptical of new tools
  • Vague positioning: unclear if this is extension, app, or service
  • No mention of what specifically differentiates from existing tools
