VSCode / VS Code / Virtual Studio Code Embedding

I largely use the VSCode integrated terminal when developing, due to the easy integration into my workflow and ability to lay out within the VSCode UI. It'd be great to use Warp, either as the terminal for the integrated terminal prompt (using a custom profile, see https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/editor/integrated-terminal#_terminal-profiles) or even as a separate extension.

Embed Warp terminal into VSCode's integrated terminal to eliminate context switching for developers already living in the editor.

The pain

Developers switch between VSCode editor and external terminal windows, breaking focus and workflow continuity. The integrated terminal exists but lacks modern features like command search, AI suggestions, and session replay that Warp provides.

The gap

VSCode's terminal is functional but basic. Warp has built features developers want (command palette, execution history, structured output). The gap is making Warp accessible without leaving the editor, currently users must choose between VSCode's weak terminal or Warp's strong one, not both.

Build angle

Create a VSCode extension that pipes Warp's rendering engine and features into the integrated terminal pane. Start by supporting Warp as a custom terminal profile, then build deeper integration (command suggestions, session state sync). Target developers already using both tools.

Strengths

  • Clear user need from someone actively in the workflow, not theoretical
  • Warp has paying customers with proven demand for its features
  • VSCode extension ecosystem is mature; terminal profile integration is documented
  • Solves real friction: context switching costs real time and attention
  • Warp likely has API/partnership interest in distribution channels

Risks

  • Warp may not expose APIs needed for deep integration; they might want to own the distribution channel
  • VSCode's terminal architecture may not support embedding another terminal's full feature set
  • Market size unclear: how many Warp users also want VSCode integration vs. just using Warp standalone?
  • Requires ongoing maintenance as both VSCode and Warp update their APIs
  • Warp could build this themselves in 2-3 weeks if they see the value
  • Adoption depends on Warp's growth; if Warp stalls, the extension becomes niche
