Will low quality AI customer support be the new normal?

Now whenever I reach for customer's support chat or phone I get an AI agent replying to me and I get into a useless loop for a couple of minutes before I start begging it to link me to a real person. Will companies start losing customers because of that or people will eventually get used to this?

Competition

Trend

No signal yet

A critique of AI customer support quality masquerading as a business idea, needs repositioning as a solution, not just a problem observation.

The pain

Customers experience frustration with AI agents that can't resolve issues, wasting time before reaching humans. Companies face churn risk if support quality degrades. There's genuine tension between cost-cutting and customer satisfaction.

The gap

The submission is a market observation/complaint, not a business idea. It identifies a problem but offers no solution, business model, or value proposition. The question 'will people get used to it?' is speculative, not actionable.

Build angle

Reframe as: (1) AI quality assurance tool that audits/improves AI support agents, (2) Hybrid platform optimizing human-AI handoff, (3) Benchmarking service showing companies their support quality vs. competitors, or (4) Training data platform to help companies build better support AI.

Strengths

  • Real, widespread pain point affecting millions of customer interactions daily
  • Timely, AI support adoption is accelerating, creating urgency
  • Clear market: enterprises spending billions on customer support infrastructure
  • Defensible if solution involves proprietary data/models on support quality

Risks

  • No clear monetization path in current form
  • Highly competitive space (Zendesk, Intercom, Gorgias all adding AI)
  • Problem may self-correct as AI models improve (GPT-4, Claude, etc.)
  • Enterprises may accept lower quality if ROI is strong enough
  • Difficult to build moat, solution likely becomes table stakes quickly
  • Requires deep enterprise sales cycles and integration complexity
