Portfolio-based hiring platform targeting startups and lean HR teams who waste time filtering resumes that don't predict job performance.

The pain

Hiring managers at startups spend 5-10 hours per role reviewing resumes that reveal almost nothing about actual work quality. A resume lists skills; a portfolio shows them. Current tools (LinkedIn, ATS systems) still funnel candidates through resume screening, creating false negatives (good builders with weak writing) and false positives (polished resumes from weak performers).

The gap

Portfolio platforms exist (Behance, GitHub, Dribbble) but they're fragmented by discipline and disconnected from hiring workflows. No unified system lets a startup post a role, receive portfolio submissions, and compare candidates side-by-side on actual work samples. Existing ATS systems don't integrate portfolio review into their core flow.

Build angle

Start with one discipline (software engineering via GitHub profiles, design via portfolio links) where portfolio data is abundant and hiring pain is acute. Build a lightweight intake tool that pulls existing portfolios, lets hiring teams annotate and score work samples, and surfaces the top 3-5 candidates. Charge per hire or per role posted. Focus on startups with 10-50 employees where hiring speed matters and resume-blindness is obvious.

Strengths

  • Clear, measurable problem: resumes correlate poorly with job performance; portfolios correlate better
  • Existing portfolio infrastructure reduces build complexity, you're aggregating and filtering, not creating from scratch
  • Tight initial market: early-stage startups and fractional HR teams have budget, hiring urgency, and low switching costs
  • Defensible workflow: once a team uses your tool to hire 2-3 people successfully, they'll keep using it

Risks

  • Portfolio coverage is uneven: engineers and designers have portfolios; accountants, sales, operations people often don't. Limits addressable market unless you solve for non-portfolio roles
  • Hiring managers may resist changing process; resume screening is habitual and feels safe despite being ineffective
  • Existing platforms (LinkedIn, GitHub, Notion) could add hiring features and undercut you with distribution advantage
  • Quality of portfolio work doesn't always predict job fit, a beautiful design portfolio doesn't guarantee someone ships on deadline or works well in your culture
  • Chicken-and-egg: candidates must populate portfolios; if they don't, hiring teams have nothing to review
