Lawn Care Task Scheduler: SKIP, 42/100 | Ideas Lab

A scheduling tool for homeowners to plan lawn maintenance tasks and decide between DIY and hiring contractors.

The pain

Homeowners don't know when to cut grass, what equipment they need, or whether hiring someone costs less than doing it themselves. They waste time researching or make mistakes that damage their lawn.

The gap

No single tool combines seasonal timing guides, equipment recommendations, and cost comparison between DIY and contractor options for lawn care.

Build angle

Start as a simple web calculator: input lawn size and zip code, get a maintenance calendar, equipment checklist, and DIY vs contractor cost breakdown. Monetize through contractor referrals or premium features like seasonal reminders.

Strengths

Clear, specific problem with measurable user actions (scheduling, purchasing, hiring)
Recurring need (seasonal, repeating annually)
Multiple monetization paths (referrals, premium subscriptions, contractor partnerships)
Low technical complexity to build MVP
Existing search demand validates interest

Risks

Extremely low switching costs, users can get this info free from YouTube, manufacturer sites, and contractor websites
Seasonal demand creates revenue volatility and user churn
Contractor referral model requires scale to be profitable; contractors won't pay for low-volume leads
Saturated market: existing tools (Angi, TaskRabbit, manufacturer guides) already solve this
Narrow TAM: only homeowners with lawns, excludes renters and apartment dwellers
No defensible moat, easy to copy, no network effects, no data advantage
User acquisition cost likely exceeds lifetime value for a free tool
