Piruetas – A self-hosted diary app I built for my girlfriend

I searched for a simple, self-hosted journal app for my girlfriend and everything I found was either too complex, too feature-heavy, too feature-less for what I needed or required trusting a cloud service. So I built Piruetas (it means pirouettes in Spanish - she chose the name btw). It's a day-per-page diary with rich text editing, drag-and-drop image uploads, auto-save, public share links, and a clean mobile UI. It can be set up for Personal or Multi-user usage via docker compose deployment. She seems to like it so I decided to give back to the community and make it available for everyone (after some QA)Live demo: https://piruet.app (login: demo / piruetas — data resets every 30 min!) Trend

No signal yet

A privacy-first, self-hosted diary app solving the trust problem in personal journaling, but facing monetization and market size challenges.

The pain

Users want simple, private journaling without surrendering data to cloud services or dealing with bloated feature sets. Existing solutions force trade-offs between simplicity, privacy, and usability.

The gap

The market lacks a self-hosted diary that's genuinely easy to deploy and use for non-technical users. Most self-hosted tools require DevOps knowledge; most consumer apps require trust.

Build angle

Position as the 'privacy-first diary for people who care about their data' with a focus on making self-hosting accessible (one-click deployment, managed hosting option). Target privacy-conscious users, therapists, and families.

Strengths

  • Solves a real problem (privacy + simplicity) with working proof-of-concept
  • Low complexity, focused feature set (day-per-page is elegant constraint)
  • Technical execution appears solid (Docker, mobile UI, auto-save)
  • Founder validation (built for girlfriend, she uses it)
  • Open source goodwill and community potential
  • Clean demo and transparent GitHub presence

Risks

  • Monetization unclear, self-hosted + open source = difficult revenue model
  • Market size constrained (only appeals to privacy-conscious + technical or willing-to-learn users)
  • High churn risk if positioned as free/open-source without managed tier
  • Competitive pressure from Notion, Day One, and other diary apps (even if less private)
  • Requires ongoing support/maintenance burden for self-hosted users
  • No clear path to venture scale (not a 10x market opportunity)
  • Founder may lack business/GTM experience (engineer-built, not market-validated)
